Sept 2006 - San Francisco
I was vacationing in San Francisco and luckily stumbled upon the 5th. International Symposium on Animal Health

Although I didn't sit in on all the lectures it seemed I was on a roll because I saw several lectures that dealt specifically with koi

This event only takes place every 4 years if I remember correctly. It's always fun to pick up some pointers and the information was extremely scientific

Left - Not a fan of San Fran! Way too much fog, cool weather and wind for my taste but it does have some great scenery

Above - I visited the Aquarium of the Bay at pier 39 which showcased a broad array local Bay fish species
KHV Lecture
Of course the topic of the dreaded KHV was covered and discussed at length

Of great interest was a vaccine which drastically reduced mortalities in infected fish

Koi Sleepy Disease (KSD) was something I never heard of before. It produced a 75% mortality rate in one reproductive experiment Of course a fishes health depends tremendously on the condition of its gills and that was examined

Picture of both healthy(L) and moribund gills

This is a nasty ulcer caused by a new viral disease - Ana Aki Byo
